Forgot Your Notes App Password? Why Some Apps Can't Help You

Some notes apps encrypt so strongly that even the company can't reset your password. Here's what that means for your notes and how to protect yourself.

Forgot Your Notes App Password? Why Some Apps Can't Help You

You open a notes app you haven't used in months and type the password you remember. It's wrong. You try again, then look for a "forgot password" link, and nothing you try gets you back in.

With some apps, that's the end of it. The notes are still on the server, but without your password nobody can read them, including the company that runs the service.

Why some apps can't reset your password

Many note-taking apps encrypt your notes on your device before they're uploaded. The key that unlocks them is derived from your password, so the company never has it.

That keeps your notes private, but it also means there's nothing the company can reset. If the password is lost, the key is lost with it, and so are the notes.

Reviewers of one popular encrypted notes app have described exactly this: they forgot their password, found there was no reset option, and had to export whatever they still could before deleting their accounts.

Privacy and recovery pull against each other

This isn't something an update can fix. If the company could decrypt your notes after a reset, the encryption wouldn't be doing its job. Strong privacy means you alone are responsible for your password.

Some apps do offer a way back in, such as a recovery key, backup codes, or another trusted device. They only help if you set them up before you need them.

What to do before you forget

None of this takes long, but it only works if you do it before you get locked out.

  1. If the app gives you a recovery key, save it somewhere safe, like a password manager or a printed sheet kept at home.
  2. Export a backup every so often, so you have a copy you can open in another app whatever happens to the account.
  3. Use a password you'll actually remember, or keep it in a password manager you trust.
  4. Before you move years of notes into a new app, find out what happens if you lose your password or your phone.

How Memory Chat handles your notes

Memory Chat stores your notes on your device in encrypted form and syncs them quietly to your other devices when you're online. You can read and search them offline.

Whichever app you use, Memory Chat included, check how recovery works before you put your notes in it. If the answer isn't clear, ask. Private notes don't help you if you can't get back into them.
